version can be obtained by registering. See the forms included for
complete details.

TERRADYNE. We need user feedback!!! We need to know what you like,

so please send us a letter or give us a call, we'll be glad to
talk to you about what YOU want in this project.

1.0 Introduction
1.1 General Information
Welcome to the Terradyne World. The Terradyne RPG is a game that was
written in response to the overall poor quality of the majority of
role playing games on the market. I was always disappointed when a good
role playing game would come to an end. Why couldn't someone make a game
so that you could add-on modules and campaigns along with all sorts of
medieval weapons and fantastic magic? This would allow you to
continiously upgrade and improve the game while still providing new
adventures and artifacts for the players to conquer and destroy. This
is my attempt in the design of fantasy role playing game for this type
of unending supply of material for the gamer. Terradyne was written
for a 286,386 or higher class machine with at least EGA.
1.2 Hardware Requirements
Terradyne will run on any computer that supports EGA and has a
A drive big enough to hold the game data. Probably the most ideal
machine one would be a, 286 AT, 12mhz with SVGA (.28 pitch) and a
hard drive. It just makes the game run alot quicker. But then again
it'll work fine on an old EGA floppy based system.
Last but not least you NEED a microsoft compatible mouse to play
Terradyne.
1.3 Executing the Program
To run the game, type: "RUNTERRA"
This will execute the game. Thats all theres to it!
The "README2.DOC" file also has the latest up to date info and
notes about this program.
2.0 Creating a Character
2.1 Character Races
Humans are not the only race in the Terradyne World. Each race has
its own special abilities and weaknesses. Following is a listing
of the races that live in the Terradyne World.
Before you create a player, for adventuring in the Terradyne World,
you should first think about what type of character do you want be?
Conceptualize what you character will look like. A powerful, sword
wielding warrior or maybe you want to be a careful, plotting
magic user that casts ancient and mystifying spells. It's left in
your hands. Create a character that YOU want to be!
Humans.
Just like you and me. Nothing special here except they are
fighting dragons and kobolds on a weekly basis!
Dwarf.
Dwarves are an ancient race. They stand only four to
five feet tall, but are compact and extremely sturdy.
Dwarves usually live in caves and mines and earn their
living by mining precious metals. Because of their strong
build they are destined to become excellent fighters.
They have great distrust of Elves. All dwarves wear beards
and the greatest insult is to have a dwarfs beard shaven.
Mountain Dwarf.
This breed of dwarf lives his entire life in the rugged
outbacks of the Dragon Horde mountains or any other range.
The harsh and weathered conditions of these climates make
these dwarfs the toughest and hardiest of all creatures
on the planet. Beware they are tough.
Hill Dwarf.
This dwarfs spend their days lying about and studying
the fine arts of jewelry, magic and other what not. In
general these dwarfs are not as tough as their counterparts
but make up for it in the keen knowledge of the land and
lore.
Wood Elf.
Elves are graceful and intelligent creatures. They love
to live in warm, wooded forests where they partake in
playing pranks on travellers. They are often arrogant and
over estimate their own capabilities, while underestimating
the skills of others. They are usually extremely intelligent
creatures, conducting themselves in the arts of magic and
sorcery. Elves are usually 6 foot plus, skinny and light
skinned.
Elf.
The normal Elf tends to congregate around human
establishments. They find humans to be funny to watch
and drink with. Elves that grow up in towns and castles
tend to be extremely intelligent. They gather all materal
and lore they can lay their hands on. An evil elf can
be a might foe!
Dark Elf.
The most evil of creatures on the planet is an intelligent
elf gone dark. The Dark Elfs are such powerful magic users
and illusionists that if it where not for there internal and
constant fighting they would surely lay waste to Stone
Mist. These beings once advanced in level are so archaic
that they tend towards evil and destruction of all that they
cannot benifit from. The Dark Elf usually leaves underground
or in a dark and secluded castle.
Gnome.
Short little go lucky creatures that are extremely helpful
to all. They love the wild and would never ever harm a
creature of mother earth.
Halfling.
Halflings like dwarves tend to live underground, but not in
caves, but halfling caves. Link comfort they make extra efforts
to keep there abode clean. They usually have gardens to
sustain their life. Many halflings make their lives as traders,
being exceptionally gifted with bartering abilities. A halfling
is deadly in close hand to hand combat.
1/2 Elf/Human.
Cross breeds of a human and elf. They tend to appear as a
human but still retain many elven characteristics. Such as
being tall and skinny with blue or gold eyes.
2.2 Character Archetypes
In the Terradyne world characters are created with a profession
that the player finds suitable. There is no single best class,
each has its own strengths and weaknesses.

2.3 Characters Attributes
Each player has a base set of abilities which define his physical and
mental prowess. A high number in any ability suggests that the
player is extremely adept in that area of prowess.
Strength. Your physical ability to move items, fight etc. The
stronger you are, the more damage you can do to an enemy.
Intelligence. How smart you are. This really helps magic users
out. Alot of spellcasting can take its toll.
Dexterity. How quick you are. (ie. Rabbit or Turtouse)
Constitution. Can you take a licking and keep on ticking? If you have
a high constitution it effects your ability to go the distance
in combat.
Ego. Are you always right? Come on I'll take you on!
Presence. Do you phyically influence others when you enter the room.
Big muscles, over bearing. You get the picture Arnold.
Comeliness. Do you get rattled easily ? When talking to people does
your character get nervous easily, uncomfortable around strangers etc.
Body. Do you have bulky muscles or are you skinny and wimpy?
Other Character Statistics.
Armor Class. Effected by the armor your wearing. The higher the value, the
better protection it provides.
Hit points. How much damage you can take before dying.
Magic Points. Amount of magical abilities you have.
Experiance points. More fights and quests you complete the better and
more competent you become.
Gold. How much money you have.
Level. Are you a neophyte or a Grand Magister?
Equipment ( Weapons, armor, shields, helms, gloves, figurines,
rings, wands, keys, herbs and others )
2.4 Character attribute table

These modifiers are applied to the characters statistics
after you have made your race selection, for your pc. You should
make careful note of all the factors that compose your character,
because all the data is intertwined. One ability maybe important in
one situation but the one you spent least points on may become
the determining factor in your quest.
2.5 Generating a Character
To generate a character for use in Terradyne World, you must run
the "CREATE quest dir" program located in the current game directory.
Once the program has gone through its title screen displaying some
info on its purpose you will prompted for several bits of information.
(1)
The program will ask you to enter your name. You can type in up to
20 characters for your name. Press return and then verify the
correct name was inputed.
(2)
You will then be asked to enter a archetype for your character. This
is essentially the role you'll be playing in the world. Press the
corresponding key to the role you want.
(3)
Now a screen will show a list of attributes (ie. your strength, dexterity,
and others) Here you will want to add points to the attributes to
better your chances at certain actions in the Terradyne enviroment.
To change an attribute :
(1) Enter the letter corresponding to the attribute you
want to change.
(2) Enter a number between 0 and 9. This number will be added
to the attribute.
(3) Continue this until all the additional points are used up.
(4) When your done hit the 'q' key to quit this process
and to proceed on.
The computer will now save your player to a file for use with the
game when your ready!

another individual. Shame!Shame!Shame!
Just enter the direction in which you want to attack and
if your attack is valid, combat is but a scream away!
One special note is due. You CANNOT attack everyone in this
game, so don't be suprised when you want to crack the local
shopkeeper over the skull with your new Divine Mace, that
I the computer will not let you! (Ohhh the power I have. grin)
Looking at signs.
Gazing at signs. When you want to read signs , click on the

Pops up a character sheet with a copy of your spellbook.
Pops up a character sheet with a record of the keys that
are on your key ring.
Save game icon.(diskette)
This is the key used to SAVE your game and CHARACTER. Use it
often. There are a total 6 save game postions available. You
can save your game in slots B-G. Slot A is left available for
people that are just starting the RPG, this allows them to begin
the quests all over (So naturally you can't save in this
position.)
* Note: A special use for this key is as follows.
When you are in a store, combat or whatever and decide not
to do anything, you can get away with clicking the right
mouse button on nothing.
For example, if you get caught up in combat with NO weapons
or spells then you can go ahead and click on a blank are
of the screen to use your hands. Sure, your not going to
critically hurt the monster but you'll at least do a little
bit of damage. (Usually just characters level.)
3.2 Character Movement & Associated Notes
Some quick notes on what to do right away.
Find the castle of Shreland and save your game right outside
of its gates!
{*}
Everytime you press a key the game advances the day by one increment
of time. So even if you sit there and hit keys you'll cycle through
night and day.
When you click on the arrow keys you will move in that corresponding
direction. That is as long as there wasn't anything in your way.
Like Death Spheres, traps and other every day encounters. (Grin)
3.3 Talking to other People
To get anywhere in the game you'll have to talk to the people. The
citizens will provide many important clues for you.
Don't pester people, they won't talk to you if all you do is hit
them up for conversation.
If your too ugly then the citizens of Terradyne will not want to
talk to you. Trying searching for a potion or two. You can also
just make another character and start over!
3.4 Magic
Spell casting is an extremely important aspect of the Terradyne game.
Spells can be cast at anytime, not just in combat, so take
advantage of this option. When you've been beaten up in combat, go
ahead and cast a couple healing spells afterwards.
3.5 Gaining Experiance
To gain experiance in Terradyne you have to get into some fights with
hideous, blood sucking, brain draining, gut wrenching, (ohh, sorry)
creatures of the world. When you do battle with these creatures and
hopefully win, you'll gain experiance and maybe get some gold for
your efforts.
After a few battles you may have gained enough experiance to advance
a level. Upon this joyous occasion you will be rewarded with
increased stats. To advance in levels you have to find the Elder
that resides in Shreland. He has the insight to grant you this
increase in stature.
Experiance Table
Level Amount of Experiance Points
------+-----------------------------
1 | 0 to 500
2 | 501 to 1000
3 | 1001 to 2000
4 | 2001 to 3000
5 | 3001 to 4000
A special note. The shareware version of Terradyne RPG only allows
characters to go up to level 5. The registered version allows
higher levels for character development.
3.6 Portals
Portals allow you to zip about the world! Make sure you make careful
note upon entry of a portal and the ending location. These
magical devices are powerful and should be used only if needed.
To enter a portal, just move onto one and click on the door icon.
And you'll be transported to your destination.
3.7 Armor
To help you bear the brunt of combat, you should probably go find some
armor, shield and helmets. These will help you absorb some of the
damage that you can recieve in combat.
These items can be purchased in specialty stores across the land. The
better the protection, the more they cost.
3.8 Weapons
There are literally hundreds of weapons available to you in the game.
Weapons can be found in dungeons or purchased at stores. Included is
a complete listing of all the weapons that are available in the game
system as of Feb 1992. More will be added, when needed or suggested.
See appendix 2 for listing.
3.9 Miscellaneaous Equipment
Keys. Keys play an important role in the game. Dungeons contain
many locked doors, all requiring a certain key for it to be unlocked.
Stores sell these keys, but most importantly of all, is that you need
to now which keys are required in a certain dungeon. To find out
which certain key a dungeon door needs will require you to do a little
investigating. Talk to people, complete mini quests etc.
Potions and Herbs. These items are similar to spells in that they all
have speical results. Increasing your hit points, presence or whatever.
They are fairly expensive, though. Costing more as the amount of there
effects increase. Shop wisely with these items.
4.0 Around the town
4.1 The Shops
The places to get supplies, weapons, arms and other essential materials
for daily survival. All the towns of Terradyne have their own stores
with different products and some of the same. But let the buyer beware,
if the player can hunt around he can find that new Troll Slayer for 2/3
the price in Waterville, but if only he checks out the prices! So shop
around.
The people in the town vary from guards protecting the people to the
merchants and peddlers that help your quest be a success by selling you
that needed Two Handed Goblin Bashing Swords that all characters
relish! Yes, they even have Magical Arts available to the mage or magic-
user in the world! A perfect place to explore and make note of before
heading out into the cold and dark dungeons of Terradyne.
The City Map.
There is a map included with the Terradyne package that shows the
city of Shreland. This castle should be one of the first places
a beginning character should visit in hopes to become a stronger
and hardier individual. Some locations in the lower level of the
castle contain foul and evil creature that require destroying. The
king may even help you out! To print this ascii file out
type " copy castle1.mmd prn:" Make sure your printer is online and
you'll recieve a dump of Shreland.
The Sewers. This place is only for the strong and careful.
Many demons plague this place in search for any hapless adventurer
that attempts to enter in search of riches. Riches there are
though, from previous explorers that never saw the light of day.
Armories. These stores offer the best in weapons and armor that
a character can find. All stores have varying inventories so
check them out often to see whats new!
Shoppes. Shoppes in general provide the player the usual survival
goods, ranging form food, keys and other essential exploration goods.
Magical Arts Shoppes. These shops allow the player to purchase some of
the most powerful weapons available on the continent. Ranging from
simple Curing spells, to Elixirs for the weak all the way up to the
Quality Death. These stores are expensive!
Temples. temples are divine institutions of resurrection and
healing. In fact this is the only place where you can have your
player turned after he has been hit by a withered or turned spell.
It costs the player all of his gold on him at the time and his
hp are reduced to 1/2 there maximum.
4.2 The Towns People
The people in any town are crucial to the succes of your quest. You
must talk to people in order to get anywhere. A quiet Troll Slashing
hero doesn't do much good if doesn't make any money doing. So go
find quests, talk to people.
These timid folks may provide you with a crucial bit of information that
you've been needing for days. Now that you've gotten that hint, go and
use it!
5.0 The Wild
During your quests, you will run into many different creatures,
characters and special encounters. Some of these encounters may have
to be resolved in armed combat.
The creatures of Terradyne vary greatly. Some are tame, and
unintimadating, while others you should have about fifty men as a
backup force to help you out! With the intial release of
Terradyne there are forty monsters that need to be dealt with. This
does not include the Evil head bosses that you have to deal with.
When an encounter occurs, the screen will change. A couple of
scrolls will be put on the screen containing a picture of you in one
and a picture of the monster you'll be fighting. These windows per se
will show you the damage blow per blow and how it affects you.
5.1 The Combat System
Combat is one of the hearts of Terradyne. By battling and defeating
monsters and creatures you slowly but surely make the world safe
for humanity once again. Combat also serves another purpose, besides
providing the computer monsters free fodder! It is to allow the
character to advance in levels, experiance and to gain treasure!
When you enter into combat with an opponent, you will have several
options available to you.
Your first choice must be that of choosing whether you wish to
engage in melee combat or do you want to cast a spell? If choose
an option, and you don't have any appropriate weapons or spells,
for example you don't have any spells in your grimoire, your only
available option will be that of hitting the zero key. This will
allow you to at minimally attack with your fists.
Unfair you say! Well when your face to face with an Orc with a
bloody battle axe, waiting to take you apart, you do not get too
many second chances!
After you have inputed your choice. The computer Dungeon Master
will conduct the round of combat. You'll be informed on a blow
by blow basis on how well your doing.
The battles over and you stand above a blood soaked corpse of a
lizard monster. The battle is only over, after on or other side has
been completely destroyed. After combat you are awarded experiance
and gold according to the monsters level and other stats.
If you absorbed lots of wounds in the battle you should probably take
a few turns to rest and heal yourself up...Because you never
know what type of four legged, fire breathing, knight killing
creature lies behind those next trees!
6.0 Advanced Gamers
6.1 Campaigning
Campaigning is for the player that is tired of just wandering around
and talking with people or fighting them. If your tired of this, go
and talk to the King in Shreland and he'll send you on a couple quests.
Complete the quest and you'll be rewarded well! Also, you'll be
sent on longer and more dangerous quests.
6.2 Tips from the UnderGround
1. Before you seek out the King to be sent on some quests you
should first tackle a couple dungeons. This will help strengthen
your character a bit for the latter tasks.
2. Go to the dungeons near the Port City of Tagals. On the
lowest level is the home of Black Serfin, the Crusader.
Just getting to him should strengthen you enough to defeat him.
3. Go to any city or trader in the countryside and get some better
weapons, armor and other items. Save your game.
4. Proceed to the Forsaken Woods and enter the caverns there. Lore
has that a evil mage makes his lair in this tomb. Find him and
destroy him.
5. By now you should strong enough to complete the tasks that the King
has for you. He dwells in castle Shreland. Search him out.
6. Explore and map every square in the maze. There are "Magic Beings"
that give out hints. There are one of kind magic items and mana stores
that should be used. Good maps will show the logical layout of
the dungeons as well.
7. Make sure your character is fully healed before entering a dungeon.
Also make sure if you have magic ability that all magic points have
been restored and if any ley lines are in the area you know where
they are.
8. When you are finding the structure of the maze, remember the
further you go down, the higher the level of the dungeon.
9. Don't worry if you lose a level 1 player. Just role up another
one. But when your character reaches level 2 or higher back him up.
10. Don't ever enter a dungeon without the maximum magic points. Also
if your magic points are down to 1/4 or less leave the dungeon.
11. Manage your spell points carefully. If you have to fight, fight
on or near a ley line. Ley lines provide extreme bonuses to you.
12. If the item costs more generally it works better and is more
effective.
13. There are no cursed items. (Wait till Terradyne II. HaHa!)
14. Equip your player with the best equipment that you can afford.
Don't decide you should of spent and extra 10 gps on a Orc Sword
when your 27 levels deep in the dungeon and run into a orc camp!
15. Magical items are the key to the success of the game.
16. Whenever you find a super magical artifact or whatever, save
the game immediately. That way if your ambushed immediately
afterwards you want lose that artifact.
6.3 Tips on Mapping
1. Copy and use the blank maps provided. Each blank map is a dot grid,
50 by 50 squares in area. Connect the dots to indicate walls or other
obstructions. Leave dots unconnected to indicate open passageways.
2. Mark locked doors, passages, npc encounters, special features and
messages.
3. Mark areas whre you can be sure of an encounter with monsters such
as in the middle of a Kobold camp! But don't bother marking every
square you encounter monsters with because chances are that its just
a random encounter.
4. For exact coordinates, if your capable, cast a "Know Location"
spell.
6.4 The Map as a Guide.
Take some to explore Shreland. Its the castle in which the King makes
his home. To assist you in your explorations, a map of Shreland is
included. The map is laid out in squares. A square represents the
distance you can move with one keypress.
The map shows you the corridors, walls, doors, buildings, and the overall
look of the town. It also shows you key locations of the shops. Shops
range from, Armories, Magical Stores to Temples.
This map does not show you where monsters and treasures can be found!
Follow this map around the castle, till you now where all the key
locations are. Don't wait until after that four hour battle, with a
tribe of orcs, to be concerned on where the Temple is! Another
key strategy : Plan in Advance!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Michael Ramsey. A computer game junkie that lives to program and play
any type of computer game. He especially loves space strategy games,
which allows him to destroy and conquer others at a whim ( no he's not
on a ego trip!) Having one of the largest software collections around,
he continues still to play some of the oldest and most addictive games
from the market. Starting in the 7th grade to program on a now ancient
TRS-80 he soon developed a passion for games. Period. Having seen the
works of other people he was caught with the bug to write software.
Starting with a rudimentary Pitfall game on his TRS-80 Color Computer
to his current creation of Terradyne he has remained true to his
one intention, to become a game designer.
